              Curriculum

              Picture
Saint Albans strives for academic rigour.  We expect students to master the basics, and we believe that hard work is essential to achieving a well-rounded education.  At the same time, we understand that students need to be fully engaged in the learning process. Consequently, we encourage students to explore and discover at every stage of their educational journey.

With its emphasis on active learning, Saint Albans provides each child with the skills to succeed and the courage to take intellectual risks in what we hope will be a lifelong pursuit of learning.

              Saint Albans uses the
Core Knowledge curriculum in all its classes.  Core Knowledge is a back-to-basics approach to education that attempts to develop cultural and academic literacy.   In each grade students will be exposed to a broad range of historical, scientific, and cultural topics that will build on one another to prepare them for later educational success. This wide array of subject matter will not only develop cultural literacy but also will build the strong vocabulary necessary for true reading comprehension.

              Language

              Picture
Saint Albans believes that language skills are essential to a good education.  Our language arts programme is designed to encourage each child to develop a love of reading and to cogently express ideas in writing.  We aim to provide every student with the ability to formulate ideas and express them clearly in written and oral settings.

We also believe that developing the ability to communicate in a foreign language is integral to a well-balanced education.  As a result, in addition to an extensive language arts programme, each class undertakes study in the French language.  Our faculty includes several native speakers of French who teach accross the curriculum beginning in the Pre-K3 year.

              Physical Education

              Picture
Physical education is an important part of a child's learning experience.  As a result, students at Saint Albans have ample opportunity to engage in both structured and unstructured play and physical education.  Elementary students visit the Vanderbilt YMCA several times per week to participate in the school's organised physical education programme.  In addition, the school has two outdoor play areas that permit children to have outdoor recess twice per day.  Finally, our proximity to Peter Detmar Park provides classes with the opportunity for frequent outdoor play.

              The Arts

              Picture
The arts are a key part of each child's daily experience at Saint Albans.  Every student is exposed to a variety of artistic media, including painting, drawing, and modeling.  In addition to learning the basic concepts of art, children learn about the great artistic movements in history.  We use masterworks as inspiration for projects and many art lessons are planned in conjunction with other aspects of the curriculum.

Music is an integral part of our academic programme.  We strive to instill a lifelong love of music through active and enthusiastic participation.  In addition, every class is given the opportunity to participate in dance.  Led by experienced dance teachers, children are exposed to both ballet and modern dance forms.  We strive to integrate the study of the arts with other curricular disciplines at every opportunity for we truly believe that art enriches the life and character of every child.

              Religious Education

              Picture
Saint Albans welcomes children of all denominations and traditions.  We believe that religion is taught in both word and deed, and thus, from their very first day, children are encouraged to treat every person with respect and dignity, for we know that every child and every person is special to God.

Classes in religion are offered to students in every grade.  In the lower grades, children will read the stories of the Old and New Testament, and learn about the ways in which God moves in our world and in our lives. Children in the upper grades will make a more in-depth study of the Bible and explore the meaning of faith and ethics in modern society.
