The arts are a key part of each child's daily experience at Saint Albans. Every student is exposed to a variety of artistic media, including painting, drawing, and modeling. In addition to learning the basic concepts of art, children learn about the great artistic movements in history. We use masterworks as inspiration for projects and many art lessons are planned in conjunction with other aspects of the curriculum.
Music is an integral part of our academic program. We strive to instill a lifelong love of music through active and enthusiastic participation. In addition, every class is given the opportunity to participate in dance. Led by experienced dance teachers, children are exposed to both ballet and modern dance forms. We strive to integrate the study of the arts with other curricular disciplines at every opportunity for we truly believe that art enriches the life and character of every child.
Language - French
Saint Albans believes that language skills are essential to a good education. Our language arts program is designed to encourage each child to develop a love of reading and to cogently express ideas in writing. We aim to provide every student with the ability to formulate ideas and express them clearly in written and oral settings.
We also believe that developing the ability to communicate in a foreign language is integral to a well-balanced education. As a result, in addition to an extensive language arts program, each class undertakes study in the French language. Our faculty includes several native speakers of French who teach across the curriculum beginning in the Pre-K 3 year.
Students learn not only elements of the French language but also about the French culture and traditions. The students listen to French music and eat French cuisine as part of their cultural understanding. Students will learn about themselves, their families, their school and community in French. As they get older, students conjugate verbs and write stories in the French language.
Science and Technology
Saint Albans believes that every student must have a firm foundation in science and technology. The rapid pace of technological improvement in our society means that no education is complete without a thorough understanding of the basic principles of science as well as the ability to work with and master technological change.
Our curriculum places a great deal of emphasis on knowledge in biology, chemistry and physics. In addition, we strive to integrate appropriate technology education throughout the curriculum.
The school's new science room opened in summer 2013, and is equipped with all the materials to make science rigourous, engaging and fun.
Library
Saint Albans believes that excellent reading skills are a key foundation for all students' academic success. Students begin pre-reading skills in the lower school program and then develop reading strategies in each grade as they develop.
To enhance a love of learning all classes visit the school's library at least once a week. Students learn the concepts of a library. They are allowed to borrow books, checking the books out of the library, and returning them to get a new book. The school library is divided into two sections - one for the preschool level and one for the elementary and middle school levels with age appropriate books in each section.
